Title: Turn Simulator - drive the vehicle
Post by: lbh07 on June 05, 2012, 08:36:58 AM
Hi,
I have found your vehicle turning simulation very helpful.  I do have one question about reversing- is it possible?  I am using a semi-trailer and need to do a 3-point turn but can't seem to find any option to reverse the truck and show my swept path.  I understand there is a vehicle path direction to reverse, but that's not for this case.

Any help will be appreciated.
Thanking you in advance.

Hi!
There’s’ no option for reversing a vehicle. Theoretically its’ the same path as you would go at forward direction, so if you can drive in one direction along a path you should also manage to reverse along the path.

Draw a path for reverse maneuvers and reverse it and generate envelope.

I'm pretty sure the backup envelope of the semi-trailer tracks differently than the forward one.  There was a University study done, I think out of Canada, in the mid-90s that developed templates that the commercial program AutoTurn adopted in version 3.0.  I could review a few enevelopes and email them to you Lars if you'd like?  Hopefully I can find a copy of the study posted online, nchrp_rpt_505.pdf is a good reference but looks to be forward movements only.

I haven't had a chance to prepare the backup envelopes, but after a suggestion by Lars in a related post, you might try PathFinder's free 30 day demo?

It shows to do backup envelopes like AutoTurn.

Australian Standard AS 2890.2 has reversing templates for medium rigid vehicle, heavy rigid vehicle and articulated vehicle plus a description on how to use them. Very handy for designing loading bays.
