Title: create 3D alignment

hi lars

attempting to create a 3D alignment and not having much success !

cannot get any meaningful results to even understand the process to be honest....I think part of the problem is the command line prompts of;
Select Profile ChoiceFrame (to read start elevation)
Select Horizontal 3Dpolyline (target)
Select Verical 3Dpolyline (elevation source)

i'm just guessing as to what these are referring to and until i'm doing that correct then no sensible results are going to come out

I read somewhere in Help that you had creating a video for this !....at the bottom of your to do list....any chance of that moving nearer the top

a video would really help just to see whats actually done regards the command line prompts

Hi!

It’s rather simple, the create alignment is a method to transfer elevations from a profile onto a line in 3D.

1. Create a smooth horizontal alignment in a plan view in 2D, convert it to a 3D polyline (with CadTools convert command).
2. Create a surface profile with your alignment as a path
3. In the profile frame, draw a smooth polyline that represent your road profile, convert it to a 3D polyline (with CadTools convert command).
4. Use the Create 3D alignment command to transfer elevations from your road profile to your flat plan line
5. You now have a 3D line in the plan view that has elevation from your profile line.

thanks, think i'm beginning to understand this now, converting the alignment in the section to a 3D poly is where I might have been going wrong ....if I understand this correctly then, the 3 command line prompts namely for create 3D alignment namely;

Select Profile ChoiceFrame (to read start elevation)..............need to click on the frame of the section created for alignment
Select Horizontal 3Dpolyline (target)..................................need to select the 3D polyline in the plan
Select Verical 3Dpolyline (elevation source)........................need to select the 3D polyline in the section

not too sure how the 3D poly in the section gets the elevation data.........but I'll give it a go as above and see what happens

That's correct.

Well, the 3D poly gets data from the profile. The frame bottom left position (coordinates) and the 3Dpolyline start coordinates combined with the exaggeration makes it possible to calculate elevations. Some data is stored in the frames X-data, that's why you need to select frame.
